Mrs. Edith S. Wiggins


Mrs. Edith Snell Wiggins, the daughter of the late Reverend Dr. Levi W. and Ella Mae Davis Williams, was born in Sumter County, SC on September 14, 1927. She departed this life on Thursday, March 26, 2020 at North Fulton Hospital in Roswell, GA.

Graveside services will be held on Sunday, March 29, 2020 at 3 p.m. at Rest Haven Cemetery in Sandersville, Georgia. Rev. Gary Ates will officiate.

Edith was united in Holy matrimony to the late Buford Snell in Tennille, GA. This union was blessed with one child. She later married Eugene Wiggins.

She graduated from Morris College, in Sumter SC in 1949 with a Bachelor’s Degree in Education.

Her career in the public school system lasted for over 34 years as a teacher, mentor, and advocate for our youth. Her first teaching position was at Bethesda School from 1949 to 1958. She then went on to teach at Beech Grove School from 1958 to 1959. Followed by DD Crawford Elementary School from 1959 to 1966. Edith completed her teaching career at Tennille Elementary School from 1966 to 1983.

At an early age she joined Joshua Baptist Church in Dalzell, SC where she was an active member. She later joined Bethesda Baptist Church in Tennille, GA where she remained a faithful member until her passing.

Mrs. Edith Snell Wiggins leaves to cherish her fond memories, a daughter, Vondell Stewart of Roswell, GA, an adopted daughter, Joanne Jacobs of Silver Spring MD; one brother, Rev. Roosevelt (Berneatha) Williams of Sumter, SC; four sisters, Rosalie Williams of Cheraw, SC, Queen Spann of Sumter, SC, Ruth King of Clinton, MD, Irene (Eugene) Curry of Union, NJ and one sister-in-law Azalee Williams of East Orange, NJ. Also, one grandson Brandon Stewart of Atlanta, GA; two granddaughters Catina Stewart of Conyers, GA and Sharita (Edwin) Tanner of Long Beach, NY; one uncle Edward (Shirley) Davis of Bishopville, SC. Along with a host of nieces, nephews, relatives and friends. A special thank you to her heartfelt caregivers, Betty Hill, Jan Bridges, Mary Anne Chandler, Macqusia Poole, Mary Renfroe and Rosetta Dawson. She was proceeded in death by her spouses Bufford Snell and Eugene Wiggins, her parents Rev. Dr. Levi W. and Ella Mae Davis Williams; and siblings James Williams, Dorothy Smalls, Thomas Williams and Eugene Williams along with a sister-in-law Annette Williams and brothers-in-law David Smalls, Wilkin Williams, James King and Ernest Spann.
