Barbara Jean Sykes departed this life unexpectedly on March 14, 2019 in Atlanta, Georgia. Funeral service will be held on Saturday, April 27, 2019 in the Chapel at L. M. Pierce Funeral home in Sandersville, Georgia at 1:00 p.m., interment following in the Union Hill Baptist Church Cemetery. Rev. Grady L. Bell, pastor of Zion Hope Baptist Church will officiate the service. Barbara was born on July 1, 1948, to the late Curtis Sykes, Sr and Mamie Darrisaw Sykes. She was proceeded in death by her beloved brother Curtis "Butch" Sykes, Jr. Barbara attended Atlanta Public Schools and was a 1966 graduate of Charles L. Harper High School. She also graduated from Morris Brown College in 1972 where she received her Bachelor of Science Degree in Secretarial Science. Professionally Barbara held several administrative positions with Georgia State University; the city of Atlanta; Fulton County Superior court and the Atlanta Fulton County Public library. Barbara was also a longtime member of Salem Baptist Church in Atlanta, Georgia. Barbara is survived by five aunts: Mrs. Virginia Humphrey (Barry) of Belle Glade, FL, Ms. Joyce Reese of Jamaica, NY, Mrs. Sharon Reeves (Marion) of Chesterfield, VA, Ms. Gladys Darrisaw of Tennille, GA, Mrs. Cherry Lee Haynes of Sandersville, GA; four uncles: Mr. Carlos Darrisaw (Helen) of Louisville, GA, Mr. Benjamin Darrisaw of Atlanta, GA, Mr. Elmer Darrisaw (Deloris) of Warner Robins, GA, Mr. George Darrisaw of Tennille, GA; a host of cousins, including a special cousin Mr. Donald Tucker (Bridget) of Reno, Nevada; Godmother Mrs. Vasthi Latimore and several longtime friends - Ms. Ida Martin, Mrs. Belinda Fitzpatrick Palmer and Mr. Robert Cook.
